First Grade
We have two first grade classrooms here at St. Joe's. We have a maximum of 18 students in each classroom. Our teachers are Mrs. Heghinian and Ms. McLaughlin.
Curriculum: First Grade at St. Joseph Regional Catholic School is an exciting year of growth in both academics and faith. Students build a strong foundation in reading, writing, and math. Our curriculum follows State and Diocesan standards to ensure that academic goals are met.
First grade students will develop reading fluency and comprehension at the independent level with grade-appropriate text. This will be achieved through the implementation of phonics and phonemic awareness. Throughout the course of the year, students will progress in word recognition and spelling skills. By the end of the year, students will also feel confident to express their ideas through proper grammar and writing.
In mathematics, students will build number sense and consistently practice their addition and subtraction facts. Other concepts taught will be measurement, place value, and solving simple word problems.
First graders will have opportunities to strengthen their faith journey. Students will be exposed to daily prayer and Mass participation. They will understand and learn how to consciously think, behave, and respond to challenging situations using the moral and ethical values and virtues of the Catholic Faith.
